People often think that by accumulating material possessions they can make their life secure and happy.
In Matthew 6:19-34, a portion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches us the appropriate way to find happiness and security in life.
Jesus said that you find happiness by investing your life in what God is doing: "Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal" (vs. 20).
Jesus said you find security by trusting God to care and provide for your needs: "And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you" (vs. 30).
Jesus declares that since God is the ultimate source of life, He is the ultimate provider of all our needs as well. So, all our human energy and action should be directed toward knowing Him and becoming like Him.
We should understand that the life we are now living will last forever.
We should trust Him with our needs in this present life so we will know how to trust Him for eternal life.
When we cooperate with God by investing our lives in what He is doing in His creation, then we will be happy and secure in this world and be prepared for the world to come!
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
Then you will have healing for your body
and strength for your bones.
Honor the Lord with your wealth
and with the best part of everything you produce.
Then he will fill your barns with grain,
and your vats will overflow with good wine."
