Our Beautiful Inheritance - Psalm 16:5-6

"Lord, You are my portion and my cup of blessing; You hold my future. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance" (Psalm 16:5-6, HCSB)

These verses use language that is usually reserved for describing the land promised to Israel. Instead, the Psalmist proclaims that it is God Himself, not the land, that is the true inheritance.

This declaration is rather like the promise made to Aaron, the brother of Moses, and his progeny, the succession of high priests over Israel.

The priests had no inheritance of land in Israel!

As the high priests over Israel, only God was to be their inheritance: "The Lord told Aaron, 'You will not have an inheritance in their land; there will be no portion among them for you. I am your portion and your inheritance among the Israelites'" (Numbers 18:20, HCSB). ; see also Deuteronomy 10:9).

Now, the Psalmist declares that God Himself is the inheritance for all of God's people, not just the priests.

And God literally fulfills this promise to us!

Through Jesus, God Himself becomes our beautiful inheritance, our portion, blessing, and future.

When we receive God's grace extended to us through Jesus, then God fills us with His Holy Spirit who dwells in us!

The Holy Spirit...the downpayment for our beautiful inheritance!

"When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. He is the down payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession, to the praise of His glory" (Ephesians 1:13-14, HCSB).
