When Jesus worked His first miracle at the wedding at Cana, changing the water into wine, the Apostle John concludes that it was a glorious display!
Although this first miracle was a quiet miracle--large pots of water suddenly were turned into wine--it apparently didn't go unnoticed by Jesus' disciples.
They must have heard Jesus tell the servants to fill six pots with water and then watched as the servants poured twenty to thirty gallons of water into each of the pots. They must have listened as the chief servant described how fine the wine tasted after the water became wine.
Though no one may have seen the water miraculously transform into wine, John records that the miracle was a remarkable display of God's glory because Jesus' disciples believed in Him.
Whatever happened, whatever they saw and heard, it reinforced their belief in Jesus as the miracle-working Messiah!
This verse is particularly reminiscent of the powerful declaration John made about the Incarnation in vs. 1:14: "The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Although John is testifying to what he observed as one of the chosen Twelve, his declaration evokes a similar response in us when we experience God's glory!
We believe! We have faith! Our faith grows!
God's glory is His manifest presence--the manifestation of God's presence.
God now manifests Himself not in a tent or a temple, but directly to human beings as the God-man, the Word of God that became flesh and lived as a human being among human beings.
And now the One who dwelled among us wants to dwell within us.
And His glory is manifest in us and through us when we tell His story and when we dwell in Him and He lives His life through us.
"And the way we know that He remains in us is from the Spirit He has given us" (1 John 3:24).
